CNN vs Fox News

While looking at the two separate news reports, one from CNN and the other from Fox News on the recent waffle house shooting in Nashville Tennesse, a clear difference in writing paints the shooting differently. Nicole Darrah, a reporter for Fox News, focused on the deaths of the victims. While four people had died, she spent the majority of her article talking about the deaths of individuals, in particular, a rapper and a "brilliant" college student. While Holly Yan, a reporter for CNN focuses on the person, who was the "hero" of the day, grabbing the gun from the attacker's hands. These two different focuses show the different views of the authors on the same issue. Nicole Darrah, by focusing on the victims, especially the victims with a "bright" future, shows the tragedy of the event. She uses quotes from family and friends, describing one of the victims as humble and kind which are very positive words. She also describes one of the victims as very passionate about their work. Passionate has a very positive connotation, as opposed to using the word intense, which has a negative connotation but means the same thing as passionate. Nicole, briefly mentions Shaw, the one who pulled the gun out of the gunman's hands. When describing the effects of his actions Nicole says that his actions "promoted" the gunman to leave. The word promoted, makes me think that Shaw just nicely ask the gunman to leave the waffle house. The word makes Shaw's actions seem less powerful and less saving than what Holly Yan put. Where as Holly Yan said that Shaw's actions forced the gunman to leave. Repeatedly Holly called Shaw the hero. The main focus of Holly's article was on Shaw and hardly mentioned the victims of the shooting. Despite having the same topic, these two articles are vastly different. They both have very different focuses and wordings. Two different news stations have two very different views on the subject at hand. These differences show that you need to take in multiple viewpoints to get the full story and also show the different views a person may have from just reading a different article about the same topic.

  1. I noticed the same things when comparing my two articles. I used one article from Fox News that mentioned a tragic death in a way that was very impersonal and bland while my other article addressed the deceased with much more emotion.
