Celebrity or Not?

While celebrities are given a certain god status there are several down sides to being a celebrity that many people do not consider. Many people wish they could be famous, but what does that really entail? There is money, notoriety, and privileges. But celebrities are always in the public eye. They are scrutinized and watched every minute. Many times media will post things about celebrities as headliners distracting from other things that are going on in the world, like the Kardashian’s. Almost everyone knows who thy are and if you don’t people will probably say you live under a rock. Celebrities are viewed at red carpets, black tie events and many other places all dressed up and “glorious”. They are beauty goals and people want to be them, or meet them. Most of the time celebrities are shown through the media as untouchable, they are gods and not people. Because of the importance and “glow” that the media puts around celebrities we often forget that celebrities are people too. Many celebrities are given a certain god status, the epitome of fashion, looks, and talent. Everyone wishes they could be them and so every part of their life is looked at. They are constantly followed by paparazzi and fans. If they are sighted by a fan at any point and that gets out online, they have to move from where they are. They have to employ body guards to make sure that they are safe from over zealous fans. Because of the media everything a celebrity says is instantly recorded and marked forever. If one thing that the public doesn’t like about them gets out the media jumps on that. Blowing it way out of proportion sometimes. They sometimes twist the words of a celebrity to make it sound like they are a bad person. With the vultures of the media many celebrities have to be careful about what they say and do, blocking off a part of themselves from the public eye. They have to walk the streets with fear that one action could be be twisted to make you a bad person. Also because of the amount of attention that is paid to their life and the words that they say, many people believe that they know who their favorite celebrities are. They have a "deep" connection with them. That is like saying that you have a deep connection with someone because you scrolled through their Instagram feed. Being a celebrity isn't all that glamorous.

  1. It must be really difficult to be a celebrity. Especially child celebrities, who are still trying to find their place in the world, and are constantly chased, singled out, and critiqued. I also think that as media has increased, it has become increasingly difficult to be a celebrity. Their faces are constantly spreading from device to device, especially as it is easier for ordinary people to take photos of them on their cell phones. I can't even imagine having to deal with all of this stress and pressure.

  2. It is very refreshing to finally hear someone else who sees this too. I feel like whenever celebrities are brought up, people are always very jealous because of the obvious up sides to being famous, but nobody really brings up the down sides. I think people fail to realize how difficult the life of a celebrity can be. Sure, they have it better than some people, but that doesn’t mean they have no problems whatsoever, just different ones. This is one of the main reasons I don’t ever want to be famous. I don’t think I could handle all of the exposure.
